“leaving no room for misinterpretation” 「誤解を生む余地を残すな!」
曖昧な表現の代表として、”good” があります。
例えば、”Recycling is good.” としたとき、なぜ “good” がいけないかと言うと、何についてRecyclingの何についてグッドと言っているのか定まらないためです。極論を言うと、何でもグッドと言えてしまいます。この文章だけではどのようにグッドなのか、どうしてグッドなのかを何も説明していません。
※ 英語の文では complete thought (完全な自分の考え、アイデア)を1つ、文の中に入れなければいけません。文が不完全で、その意味を前後の文脈に頼らなければならない文というのは、文としての本来の機能が成り立っていないと判断されます。その結果、自分の考えがうまく読者に伝わらない、誤解が生じてしまうなどの問題が起こります。
先ほどの “Recycling is good.” は、例えば “Recycling is an effective way of reducing our carbon footprint.” のように書き換えることができます。
下記の表現や、”etc.” “and so on” も曖昧な表現の代表ですので、使用は避けましょう。
